The Rock Art of Loughcrew Cairns

This one-day workshop gives you the chance to explore the art of the cairns followed by a guided tour of the cairns themselves.
The morning session starts with an introduction to the megalithic art of Ireland and Europe, looking at the similarities and differences between the sites. You’ll learn about the range of diverse meanings put forward by the archaeologists and astronomers who have investigated this ancient art.

You’ll have a chance to familiarise yourself with the symbols in a practical drawing exercise where you can discuss your own ideas as to what the artwork meant to those people who created them thousands of years ago.
After lunch we’ll visit Loughcrew and you’ll have the chance to go inside Cairn T where every year during the Spring and Autumn Equinox the rising sun illuminates the highly decorated back stone. This part of your day is led by a qualified local guide.

About the Guides/Tutors:
Michelle Boyle is a visual artist who lives and works in Garryross School, in county Cavan. She has degrees in Archaeology and Heritage, History and Cultural Anthropology and a Diploma in Sources for Local History.

Malachy Hand, is a Fáilte Ireland accredited tour guide for the Meath area and has been guiding at Loughcrew cairns with the OPW for three seasons. He has extensive knowledge of the local area - both historical and current - and has a Certificate in Local History Studies.
